Statement of Purpose

             Greater Gwinnett Christian, (GGC), is an organization of Christian homeschooling families prayerfully established to encourage and support the teaching of Christian ethics and the building of Christian character through participation in Christ-centered extracurricular activities related to athletics. 

            It is important for us to remember that this program is not a recreational league.  We seek to be competitive at the high school level.  Therefore, hard work is encouraged and rewarded.

Eligibility Requirements

Following are the requirements for a family to participate in GGC Basketball:

·         They must be in compliance with the Georgia Homeschooling Law.  In addition, although the Georgia law does not require persons over the age of 16 to be enrolled in school, they are also not eligible to play high school sports if they are not enrolled in an academic educational program.  GGC adheres to that same principle.  Therefore, GGC requires the same educational program for all its players that the Georgia law requires for students between the 7^th and 16^th birthdays.  If a player chooses not to participate in an academic educational program adherent to Georgia code, he also may not participate in GGC Barons basketball.  Georgia law stipulates, “A basic academic educational program that includes, but is not limited to, reading, language arts, math, social studies, and science.  Georgia Code Ann. ~20-2-690(c)(4).

·         They must submit a photocopy of their Intent to Homeschool.

·         They must sign the statement of faith.

·         They must sign the release and indemnity agreement.

·         They must pay the GGC annual fee, as well as the basketball season fee.

·         They must be willing to abide by all the rules discussed in this handbook.

·         They must understand that eligibility standards regarding age set by each tournament entered will be adhered to by GGC regarding that tournament.

·         A player/cheerleader is considered ineligible for GGC Basketball if any of the following have occurred prior to the beginning of the season:

1.      The individual has graduated from or completed his homeschool training.

2.      The individual reaches age 19 before Sept. 1 of the school year. 

 3.      The individual is actively enrolled in full-time college.*

4.      The individual is employed for more than 20 hours per week.

            *A player/cheerleader is considered eligible if he or she is jointly enrolled in home school and college courses during his/her junior and senior year and does not violate any of the above.

 Parental Notice: Competitive League Statement 

            GGC teams are not members of recreational, teaching, or fun leagues.  The Barons are involved in competitive regional, state and national competitions.  No guarantee of playing time is implied or promised for any player because they are selected for a team.  Coaches have complete discretion as to whom they play and how much playing time a player receives based on their judgment of circumstances, player readiness, their maturity, skill, cooperation, effort and other factors.  Parents are requested to be encouraging and supportive of their players and counsel them privately to continue to work hard, improve, not to be discouraged and to be patient. 

Fees

          There are two fees for participation in the GGC basketball season. The first one is the family membership fee of $25.00.  This fee is for the whole year and helps to pay administrative costs.  The price is the same regardless of how many children in your family are participating, or in how many sports.   Paying this fee qualifies you as a member of the corporation for the 2009-2010 season.   Family membership fees are per school year (September 1 to September 1).    The second fee is the basketball season fee.  The fee for the first child playing varsity or junior varsity is $500; the fee for subsequent children is $200 each.  The fee for the first child playing on a middle school team is $275.  The fee for Elementary team $200.  The fee for subsequent children is $200 each.  The season fee for each cheerleader is $175, plus uniform.              

          The family membership fee should be paid at registration. One-half of the season fee is due on the first day of practice. The other half is due before the uniform is issued.  Special arrangements may be made with the athletic director or coordinator.  No one will be allowed to practice unless one half has been paid.  No player will be given a uniform until the second half is paid, except by special arrangement.

          If your child does not make the cut, your check will be returned or destroyed. Checks written at the parent information meeting will not be cashed until after the cut. 

Insurance           

          All athletes, coaches, and board members are covered by the GGC’s accident insurance while participating in Barons activities. 

The Cut

            We are thankful that the number of players trying out each year continues to grow.  However, keeping everyone on the team could mean a team with as many as 20 or more.  It is nearly impossible to allow each player enough attention and playing time with that many players.  Therefore, the Board has decided to have a tryout and only carry 12 players on each team.  The GGC Board will determine any exceptions to this.            

          Tryouts will be scheduled in early October, with the date, time and place being posted on the website, www.gobarons.com.  Players and their families will be notified as to team placement.  Players will be placed on teams by the coaches and staff based on their skill levels. 

The Schedule           

          The schedule lists the time that the first game starts.  The games are listed in the order that they will be played.  All teams do not necessarily play every night.  Middle School teams may play simultaneously to JV or varsity games when at home.  Middle School games may be played on a different schedule than the JV and Varsity teams when away.   Please consult your schedule.

            Tournaments, both local and away, are a part of our season schedule, and as such, are not optional.  All team members are expected to participate.

 Practice           

          Practices are scheduled to begin in early October.  In order to assist parents to get school completed in the morning, we will be practicing in the afternoon and evening several days a week during the month of October.  A practice schedule will be distributed and any changes will be communicated to the players.  Beginning in November, practices will be one or two times per week, based on the game schedule.             

Shoes           

          All participants are encouraged to have a team shoe insofar as it is possible. If there are extenuating circumstances, they will be reviewed on a case by case basis.  We try to keep expenses down.  Socks and shoes must be uniform and approved by coaching staff, athletic director, and basketball coordinator. 

 Basketball Uniforms           

          We use our navy uniforms for our away games and white for home.  (However, both uniforms must be brought to every game—regardless of home or away.)  Uniforms will be given out the last week of practice.  Each player is responsible for the care and cleaning of his or her uniforms.  Uniforms are a huge investment and must last a number of years.  Therefore, please adhere to the following instructions: 

1. Machine wash in mild detergent with like colors only.
2. Please, do not use any bleach products!
3. Hang uniforms to dry.  Please, do not put uniforms in the dryer.
4. Please, do not iron.
5. You will be assessed a replacement cost of $150.00 for damage or loss of uniform—determined by Basketball Coordinator.  The charge for a lost or damaged uniform is the cost of a new one, regardless of circumstances.
6. Uniforms will be collected at the last game.  Any not received at this date will be charged a $25 per week late fee.

 Warm-ups           

          All players are required to purchase Barons warm-ups (monogramming available) and Barons T-shirts.  ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER T-SHIRT IS ACCEPTABLE ON A GAME DAY!  Failure to adhere to this will jeopardize your participation for the game that day.  Street clothes for a player on a game day are not acceptable.  Any exceptions will be communicated to the players by the individual coach.  GGC seeks to portray the team concept.  Therefore, individuality is not encouraged on game days.  All players are to wear warm-ups to all Barons game events. 

          GGC members are exhorted to conduct themselves in and out of competitions in a Christ-like manner, remembering that we are all one in the Body of Christ, and that we are to be light in darkness (Eph. 4, Phil. 1:27). Also, members are only to give a “good report” and are to follow the Biblical example of keeping right relationships with one another. 

            Though the purpose of our organization is not social in nature, GGC offers an outstanding opportunity for homeschooled children to make friends and develop healthy peer relationships.  All Barons practices, games, activities, and trips are team oriented, and as such, all friendships are to be maintained in a group setting.  A young lady should not be in the presence of one or more young men, without other young ladies or a chaperone present.  Likewise, a young man should not be in the presence of one or more young ladies, without other young men or a chaperone present.  Following this guideline will allow us to maintain an appropriate Christian testimony and avoid many potential pitfalls.

GGC Parent, Coach, Player, Cheerleader and Fan Code of Conduct

            At all times at any GGC competitive event, parents, coaches, players, cheerleaders and fans are required to exhibit positive, encouraging behavior towards referees, other teams, their fans and players.  Acceptable behavior includes loud, positive cheers and encouraging remarks and supporting our players’ and coaches’ efforts.  Derogatory remarks or harassment directed to referees, other players or fans will not be allowed.  GGC member families should make guests they bring aware of this policy and be responsible for their cooperation.  During games, GGC Board members are requested to remind offending members or fans of this policy.  Referees are authorized under Georgia High School rules to remove any fan or parent from the gym or field for rude or disruptive behavior whether or not they have been warned by a GGC representative.              

          It is GGC’s belief that members, players, coaches and fans of a Christian organization involved in a competitive event should not forget who they are or Who they represent when they walk into a gym or on the ball field.  GGC should be known for its competitive teams, encouraging presence, enthusiastic supporters and positive behavior.  

GGC Player and Coach Code of Conduct

            We adhere to Georgia High School rules with regard to technical fouls.  If a player receives a technical foul for any fault of character (hitting floor or walls with fist, language, talking back to a referee, etc.), that player will be required to sit out the remainder of the game and will be suspended the next game. If a player receives a second technical for character, he will be suspended the next two games.  If a player receives a third technical, that player will be required to meet with the GGC Board prior to any further play. Since there may be room for grace in some situations, on-the-spot appeals may be considered by the Coach, Athletic Director, and Basketball Coordinator.              

          If a player receives a non-character technical foul (checking in early, hand in net, slap backboard, or number not in book, etc.), that player will be allowed to continue to play.   The Board will evaluate conduct regarding a coach. Our desire is that all players, coaches and fans exemplify the character of Jesus Christ in every word and in every deed. 

GGC Cheerleader Code of Conduct

          The purpose of the GGC basketball cheerleaders is to practice the spiritual gift of encouragement (Romans 12:4-8).  The responsibilities of the cheerleaders include cheering at the basketball games in a positive way, encouraging a spirit of positive cheering among the spectators, promoting good sportsmanship, and providing positive team support, both on and off the court.  Negativism, self-promoting behavior and attitudes, and attempts to emulate secular cheers and fashions are not in keeping with the intent of the GGC cheerleading program, and as such, are not acceptable.

Disciplinary Procedure           

          GGC expresses our goals of Christian behavior. We will try to maintain fairness and gentleness in regard to discipline.  It is the Board’s intent to allow the coach to take care of all disciplinary actions unless the Board feels that a major breach has occurred or that the coach has not adequately addressed an issue or a repeated offender.  Please warn your children that if they do not know the punishment for breaking a rule, then they are taking the chance that they may not like the discipline.           

          Within these guidelines the coach of each team will set and enforce appropriate rules. When a grave breach of these rules occurs, the coach must then seek consensus with the Athletic Director (A.D.) before a suspension takes place. The coach and A.D. are responsible for evaluating the incident and taking appropriate action. The individual and his/her parents (or guardians) will be notified of the disciplinary action to be taken. An appeal may be made by a parent, if deemed necessary, to a committee of the coach, A.D., and a board member. The committee’s decision is final.           

          A student who has been expelled from a public or private school may not participate as a GGC player for one year from the time of expulsion.  Exceptions may be made under extraordinary circumstances by an appeal of the student and at least one parent to the coach, athletic director, and coordinator from the given sport, and one board member from another sport.  If the exception is approved, the player will be on probation for one year.           

          GGC reminds all member families that non-player family members or guests must be closely supervised by the parents. Parents are fully responsible for any damages caused by their children to a home or away facility. Family members not complying with this policy will be asked to not attend games.

GGC Family Dress Code

          All GGC members are asked to dress modestly and in a conservative manner appropriate for the season. GGC does not wish to impose dress requirements, but we do acknowledge that as Christians we should dress in a manner that would please Christ.           

          While it is recognized that our appearance is not the truest expression of our identity, nevertheless, the Scriptures constantly exhort us to take precautions concerning how we are read by a believing and unbelieving world alike.  To that end we feel it appropriate to take an active role in setting the pace of how we would like to be perceived by those that observe our GGC family.  We feel very strongly that modesty is a virtue that is largely ignored, most certainly by the world and sadly all too often by the church.  (I Timothy 2:9; I Peter 3:3; Romans 12:2; Isaiah 3:16) 

GGC Boys Hair & Dress Code

           Designated warm-ups, T-shirts, and uniform(s) given to you by GGC must be worn during the game or any time indicated by the Coaching Staff.  No other substitutes are permitted. Dress code is applicable to what one wears when he arrives for a Barons event and when he leaves the venue.

Hair

            Hair must be a conservative style and neatly trimmed. Ethnic braids must be worn in a style that conforms to the shape of the head.  Extremes are not acceptable; this includes shaved heads, colored, bleached or highlighted hair, Mohawks, lines or letters shaved in the hair, etc.  Facial hair must be neat and trimmed.            

          No male member of the GGC teams may wear earrings or body piercings to GGC functions.  These functions include practices, games, tournaments, camps, meetings, and officially sponsored Barons social events. 

Dress for Boys’ Teams

            Your Coach will give you specific instructions as to attire for tournaments and out-of-town trips.  Any attire that the Coaching Staff or GGC Board feels is outlandish or is drawing attention to you in a negative way may restrict you from participating with the team.  These rules are guidelines intended to foster a positive team attitude. The torso and undergarments should remain completely covered at all times while standing or seated, even when the arms are raised over the head.   

GGC Lady Barons Hair & Dress Code           

          Designated warm-ups, T-shirts, and uniform(s) given to you by GGC must be worn during the game or any time indicated by the Coaching Staff.  No other substitutes are permitted.  Dress code is applicable to what one wears when she arrives for a Barons event and when she leaves the venue.

            Hair should be pulled back away from the face, and managed as prescribed by the coaching staff.   Any makeup worn should be natural in appearance and not applied so as to draw attention to any one person. 

Nails

            The Lady Barons’ fingernails will not have any nail coloring except a natural tone while competing on the floor.  In addition, the nails should be kept reasonably short so as not to injure someone.  If there are questions, the referees may ask a player to cut them.   

Clothing

            Shorts for our Lady Barons will need to be no more than 4 inches from the kneecap in length.  If you prefer spandex shorts, please have another pair of loose fitting shorts of the correct length over the top of them.  Shirts will not reveal any undergarments.  The torso and undergarments should remain completely covered at all times while standing or seated, even when the arms are raised over the head.  As always, any article of dress that is deemed to be questionable will be subject to the final approval of the GGC Coaching Staff and/or Board.

          The uniform chosen for games is to be in keeping with the spirit and intentions of the dress code.  Modesty will be the standard.  Uniforms, warm ups, and appropriate accessories are to be purchased by individual cheerleaders as prescribed by the Athletic Director and Basketball Coordinator, who will consult with the cheerleading coach(es).  We will attempt to keep the uniform for at least two years, to help keep down the cost to participating families.            

          All cheerleaders are required to purchase Barons T-shirts for practice and game days.  ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER T-SHIRT IS ACCEPTABLE AT PRACTICE OR ON A GAME DAY!  Failure to adhere to this will jeopardize your participation for the practice or game that day.  Any exceptions will be communicated to the participants by the individual coach.  GGC seeks to portray the team concept.  Therefore, individuality is not encouraged on game days.  All cheerleaders are to wear Barons attire to all Barons game events. 

Donations and Fundraising

          GGC has officially been recognized by the IRS as a tax exempt non-profit organization. While the membership and season fees are not tax deductible, contributions made to GGC are. We encourage those who are able to consider contributing both as individuals and to solicit contributions corporately.  

            The goal of fundraising is three fold-- to increase revenue for the general budget in an attempt to keep team fees down, to allow each family to participate in the coaches’ stipends, and to offset expenses incurred on our out-of-town trips.  Each family is asked to participate in the “Free Throw Mania” fundraiser in October.  Other fundraisers will be optional, with profit from these fundraisers going into family accounts.  Each family may apply the funds in their “account” to offset travel expenses.  Unused funds in individual accounts at the end of the season will be automatically credited into the general fund.  Funds do not “carry over” to the next season. 

          All families are greatly encouraged to raise funds beyond those of your family’s traveling needs, so that the organization may remain financially sound. 

Volunteers

            We are a parent-run organization and are always in need of volunteers.  We greatly appreciate those who have consistently given of their time and we eagerly look forward to having more workers.  Most organizations have 5% of the people doing 95% of the work.  This is not the case with the Barons.  All families are required and expected to participate in working in the concession stand, working at the gate, and cleaning up after home games.  Additionally, we need team moms, score bookkeepers, clock keepers, video tapers, stat keepers, drivers, assistant coaches, fundraising assistants, event organizers, scheduling coordinators, etc. 

Concessions           

          All profits from our concessions go back into the basketball program, and this aspect of GGC basketball has an excellent reputation among those who come to our home games.  It should be noted that this is a lot of work and expense.  Parents and/or players 16 and older are required to work for a predetermined number of games in the concession stand.  Because our home games are more demanding, we need full participation so that a few families do not carry the whole load.  Please note that children under the age of 16 are not allowed to work or be present in the concession stand. 

Gate           

          Proceeds from the gate at home games help directly pay for the facility and referees.  Only parents and/or grandparents of players may work at the gate. 

Directions           

          These are provided for your information and on the website.  If directions for a game are not found, they will be distributed closer to the time of the game date.  Some of the teams we play also rent their home gym and are still trying to secure a gym after our handbook has been distributed.  PLEASE realize that we have published these directions for you so that you will not have to call at the last minute to secure them.

Travel Arrangements

          Since we do not have a team bus, each parent is responsible to see that his player or cheerleader gets to the game. If your child rides with someone else, please make sure that you have spoken to the other parent personally.  It is too difficult for coaches to be responsible for every player. “It’s O.K. with my mom”, is NOT adequate.  Car pools are encouraged.            

          Regarding our out-of-town trips, Contracts For Students Traveling Without Parents and Medical Release Forms are included in the back of this handbook.  They are self-explanatory and you will be notified when they are needed.  You may need to photocopy the forms, as separate forms are needed for each trip. Statement of Faith

WE BELIEVE:           

          The Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God and constitutes completed and final revelation. Nothing has been added to it and it is the only source of divine truth. The Bible is without error in whole or part; including theological concepts as well as geographical and historical detail (2 Tim. 3:16; Rev. 22:18-19).            

          God has existed from all eternity in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ was God come in human flesh, being fully God and fully man, except without sin (John 1:1-18).           

          All men are in violation of God’s righteous requirements and His holy character, both by nature and act; and are therefore under His wrath and just condemnation. The central purpose of the coming of Jesus Christ was to pay the penalty of man’s sin through His substitutionary death on the cross – the successful accomplishment of which was attested to by His subsequent visible bodily resurrection (Rom. 3:10, 23; Rom. 6:23).            

          Salvation is offered as a gift; free to the sinner. This gift must be responded to in individual faith, not trusting in any personal works, but the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Georgia Homeschooling Law           

In Georgia, God has blessed us at this time with a supportive home schooling law. GGC supports this law and expects its members to abide by it. The failure of a few to comply hurts the reputation of our group and home schooling as a whole. Ga. Code Ann. § 20-2-690 states the following:

(c) Parents or guardians may teach their children at home in a home study program which meets the following requirements:

(1) The parent, parents, or guardian must submit within 30 days after the establishment of a home study program and by September 1 annually thereafter a declaration of intent to utilize a home study program to the superintendent of schools of the local school district in which the home study program is located;

(2) The declaration shall include a list of the names and ages of the students who are enrolled in the home study program, the address where the home study program is located, and a statement of the 12 month period that is to be considered the school year for that home study program. Enrollment records and reports shall not be used for any purpose except providing necessary enrollment information, except with the permission of the parent or guardian of a child, pursuant to the subpoena of a court of competent jurisdiction, or for verification of attendance by the Department of Public Safety for the purposes set forth in subsection (a.1) of Code Section 40-5-22;

(3) Parents or guardians may teach only their own children in the home study program, provided the teaching parent or guardian possesses at least a high school diploma or a general educational development diploma, but the parents or guardians may employ a tutor who holds a high school diploma or a general educational development diploma to teach such children;

(4) The home study program shall provide a basic academic educational program which includes, but is not limited to, reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science;

(5) The home study program must provide instruction each 12 months to home study students equivalent to 180 school days of education with each school day consisting of at least four and one-half school hours unless the child is physically unable to comply with the rule provided for in this paragraph;

(6) Attendance records for the home study program shall be kept and shall be submitted at the end of each month to the school superintendent of the local school district in which the home study program is located. Attendance records and reports shall not be used for any purpose except providing necessary attendance information, except with the permission of the parent or guardian of a child, pursuant to the subpoena of a court of competent jurisdiction, or for verification of attendance by the Department of Public Safety for the purposes set forth in subsection (a.1) of Code Section 40-5-22;

(7) Students in home study programs shall be subject to an appropriate nationally standardized testing program administered in consultation with a person trained in the administration and interpretation of norm reference tests to evaluate their educational progress at least every three years beginning at the end of the third grade and records of such tests and scores shall be retained but shall not be required to be submitted to public educational authorities; and

(8) The home study program instructor shall write an annual progress assessment report which shall include the instructor’s individualized assessment of the student’s academic progress in each of the subject areas specified in paragraph (4) of this subsection, and such progress reports shall be retained by the parent, parents, or guardian of children in the home study program for a period of at least three years.                 In I Corinthians 6, we are taught not to take our disputes to the ungodly for judgment. Keeping this in mind, I give consent for my child/children to participate in GGC competitions and will indemnify and hold harmless GGC, GGC board members, GGC coaches and personnel, host facilities, and Renz Baseball Academy  and Buchanan High School of Technology against any and all claims, including any claim, suit, or action for personal injuries or otherwise.

Contract for Students Traveling Without Parents

1.                  My designated chaperone is _______________________________________.  This person has been selected by my parents, and I understand that he/she is accepting extra responsibility to watch out for me.  I will seek to express my gratitude and make his/her job an easy one.

2.                  I am aware that each coach, administrator, and parent affiliated with Greater Gwinnett will be seeking to care for my best interests.  I will do my very best to make their job as easy as possible by having an attitude of submission and to fulfill the known wishes of every adult chaperone on the trip.

3.                  I understand that we are incorporating the “Buddy System”, and I will not at any time go off by myself without special permission.

4.                  I will follow every curfew imposed upon me – for my own welfare as well as for my team.  In addition, my behavior at the hotel/camp will be honorable.

5.                  I understand that I will be sent home if there is any insubordination or unwillingness to adhere to this contract.
